Eccy Suffer Heavy Defeat

After almost four weeks out of action due to waterlogged pitches, Eccleshall travelled to Merseyside to play promotion chasing Litherland REMYCA. Youth team player Miles Johnson was making his debut and another signing, Ian Maitland, was on the bench.
Eccleshall started well and an early ball into the box was just too far in front of Tom Wakefield and keeper Ben Morrow came out to collect. Moments later, Remyca almost conceded an own goal. At the other end, a low shot by Paul Foy was tipped around the post by Matt Johnson. From this, Remyca took the lead as the corner was headed home by David Crist on 8 minutes. This lifted Remyca and they pushed forward – a cross from the right beat Matt Johnson but there was no-one to apply the final touch. A free kick by Foy was just over the bar. On 14 minutes, with Johnson on the ground, Colin McDonald put a great chance over the bar. However, the pressure paid off on 19 minutes when a good move led to Colin Quirk finding their new signing Jason Mc Shane, who beat Matt Johnson to put Remyca two up. This stirred the Eagles and Serkari Ahmadi beat their defence but Morrow beat Daniel Needham to the ball. Needham then found Wakefield and his cross had to be cleared for a corner. From this, Morrow saved Ahmadi’s header. The same player had another chance but his shot was well wide. A great crossfield ball by Miles Johnson found Wakefield, whose effort was cleared. The Eagles conceded again on 44 minutes when confusion in the defence led to Mc Donald finding the net.

Eccleshall made an early change, with Maitland replacing Wakefield. Almost immediately, he forced Morrow into a save. This was short lived as on 57 minutes, Foy was left unmarked from a corner and easily headed home, giving Johnson no chance. Manager Dave Dale brought on Kyle Dovey for Jake Standbridge and shortly after, Ahmadi had an effort blocked and Shay Finney fired wide of the post. A great ball down the middle left Ahmadi running clear and Morrow came racing out to collect at his feet. Then Foy was left unmarked again and his header was just wide of the post. On 80 minutes, it was five when McShane’s rising shot found the top corner of the net again giving Matt Johnson no chance. The Eagles kept plugging away and a free kick on the edge of the box by Louis Downs brought a great diving save out of Morrow and the keeper thwarted Maitland with the rebound. Maitland then had another chance but it was deflected wide of the post. The Eagles were made to pay again for missed chances when Mc Shane was left clear on 89 minutes and his shot beat Matt Johnson but hit the post and sub Doherty netted the rebound to make it six and complete Eccleshall’s misery. After two wins on the bounce before the enforced break, the level of defeat was unexpected and the Eagles now have two home games to get back on track.
