Eccleshall run over, as Eccy are beaten at Oswestry

Eccleshall’s unbeaten league run came to an end at the hands of Oswestry Town after a 4-0 defeat sunk the Eagles.

Eccleshall had the best of the first half with several half chances for Louis Downs, Danny Needham and Leigh Skellern but some good defending kept the scores level.

Oswestry took the lead against the run of play on the half-hour mark when Stuart Vernon’s looping effort deceived Matthew Johnson and found its way in.

The home side gained confidence from the goal and had a second just before half-time. Joseph Newton did well out wide and put the ball on a plate for Jack Harris to double the lead.

Oswestry spent the majority of the second half holding onto their lead, retaining defending well and retaining possession.

Eccy had a chance in the 72nd minute when Needham was in one-on-one with the goalkeeper but a good save preserved his clean sheet.

Oswestry put the game beyond doubt in the 85th minute. Great persistence from Harris created an opening. The ball came to Josh Sumner and his deflected shot beat Johnson at the near post.

Oswestry added insult to injury in the last minute when Dan Tinsley nodded home from a Newton cross.

Eccleshall will now head to Leek Town on Tuesday evening in the Staffs Senior Cup, where the winner will face either Chasetown or Stoke City.

The next league game will take place next Saturday as Eccy play host to Atherton LR.
