KELLY’S HEROES MARCH ON

After Bank Holiday Monday’s home draw against Alsager Town, Eccleshall travelled into Derbyshire to meet New Mills, hoping to continue their unbeaten run. Manager Liam Kelly welcomed back Lewis Dunn, Aidan Blaise, Luke Lewis and Anthony Malbon to the starting line-up with Mark Groom on the bench. Going into the game, the Millers were two places higher in the league, but the Eagles had two games in hand on them.
Eccleshall were attacking up the sloping pitch and took an early lead after five minutes. A low Lewis cross into the box found Malbon and he hooked the ball past Millers ‘keeper Dylan Forth to find the net. Minutes later, Forth was equal to another Malbon effort. New Mills came back and a cross found Kyle Hawley challenging Eagles keeper Aaron Woolrich who failed to collect and Blaise headed clear. Woolrich then held a Christopher Rogers header before Lucas Green-Birch brought a diving save from Forth. Another chance for the Millers saw Marcus Dibble heading just wide of the post from a corner. However, on 28 minutes, it was Eccleshall who went further in front. A free kick into the box by Jordan Flattley found Blaise and his bullet header found the top corner giving Forth no chance. Four minutes later, Malbon ran through to find the net again but was dubiously flagged offside. Back came the Millers and Teddy Osipitan brought a good diving save from Woolrich. The home side were looking threatening moving forward but again, the Eagles defence were holding firm. A powerful free kick by home skipper Darren McKnight was blocked by the Eagles wall and he volleyed the rebound over the bar. Woolrich made another good save from Kyle Oakes before Malbon tested Forth again before the interval.

An early effort was blazed over by McKnight and his free kick minutes later was held by Woolrich. In reply, a Callum Feeney cross found Malbon and his header was tipped around the post by Forth. The Millers were now mounting more pressure and on 58 minutes had a goal disallowed for a foul on Woolrich. Hawley fired wide five minutes later before finding the net only to be flagged offside. Then a last-ditch clearance by Feeney saved a certain goal with Woolrich beaten. All the attacking pressure was now from the home side, with only sporadic attacks from the Eagles. Kelly brought on Mark Groom, Liam Tomlin and Jack Flanaghan as the half progressed and in a rare move forward Lewis netted only for play to be brought back for handball. The same player then had a decent penalty shout turned down. With four minutes to go, Millers striker Richard Tindall missed a great chance right under the bar. George Woodroffe was brought on before Millers’ Raheem Hanley blazed over. The Eagles defence continued to hold firm through five minutes of added time to claim another three points.

The home side will look back on decent missed chances, but full credit must be given to the Eagles defence which is looking more solid with each game. This will be seriously tested on Tuesday evening when second placed Brocton visit Pershall Park in a tasty local derby.
Eagles: Woolrich, Taylor (Groom), Dunn, Benton, Blaise, Feeney. Lewis, Flattley, Malbon (Tomlin), Jones (Flanaghan), Green-Birch (Woodroffe).
